There has been a mysterious and horrific killing of four adults, three vacationers and a local cyclist in an area close to Lake Annecy. I’m shocked and horrified to have learned that amongst the carnage, two girls – eight and four – have been injured and traumatized by what seems like a random execution. The eight year old suffers from a skull fracture and shoulder wound and the four year old hid under the dress of, what I have heard to be, her mother.
This is all very shocking here in the Lake Annecy area. Annecy is known for being serene with a low crime rate. Popular amongst English vacationers and other northern Europeans for skiing, camping, cycling, and swimming, Annecy is a delightful place for tourists to come and now with this seemingly random killing, I just hope that tourists aren’t scared to come and enjoy what the region has to offer.
Just last weekend, Mr J and I were in a popular shopping mall here in Annecy and I noted how potentially dangerous it is that many French parking lots have just one exit, especially in the event of terrorism, violence, storms, or fire. Mr J chuckled at the thought that terrorism could happen in our sleepy city, but (having studied terrorism under my major) I insisted that terrorism and extreme violence can happen anywhere at and at any time. Sadly, this case has proven my point.
I sincerely hope that the authorities find out what really happened, perhaps with the help from the children. I also pray that the children who had to endure this frightening experience get the best emotional and physical help they need to move forward with their young lives. My heart goes out to the family and friends who have lost their loved ones in this heinous crime.
